How does stanning white characters affect people of color?
Since people are apparently unable to utilize Google, I’m here to provide non-exhaustive examples.
Let’s say you’ve got an ensemble show, where a few of the characters are people of color, but the cast is still mostly white. When the fans latch on to certain white characters and badger for more screen time and more back story for that character, other characters, including the characters of color get shafted. As characters of color are usually the least developed, this has a more pronounced effect of pushing said characters to the periphery.
The message this sends is that no one gives a fuck about the stories of POC. It says that even when you include a well-written character of color, fans are going to be more invested in white characters, even if those white characters are secondary. So why bother to write main POC in the first place? What’s the point of expanding their storyline if no one cares about it?
Furthermore, what do you think seeing minor white characters fawned over makes fans of color feel like? Represented, included? Fandom doesn’t happen in a vacuum. The minor side characters that fans just happen to love are overwhelmingly white for a reason.
